Remote work is on the rise and doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon
A remote work environment can also reduce several overhead costs. Reducing office size help decrease rent costs, utility and maintenance costs, and some of those miscellaneous costs like coffee and water service, or meal plans. Here are a few tips for you as your company transitions to a remote work.
Set Expectations
Before your transition begins, speak your department leaders and develop guidelines. Let them know expectations on when they should be online. They should also setup weekly 1:1 and check-ins with their direct reports to talk day-to-day work, define goals, and project performance and outcomes.
Business Tools
Many of your employees might be using personal devices. If you’re in an industry and have to adhere to strict privacy and data protection rules, provide your employee’s secure equipment so you’re compliant. Use the same communication systems and software for calls, and video conferencing. HR/Human Capital Management software will keep business operations running smoothly. Productivity software can track projects, deadlines, and customer satisfaction.
Employee Engagement
Promote employee engagement. Working with people that you can’t interact with in person can be challenging. Your employees can feel isolated. Host some fun team events online. Schedule 1:1 that isn’t focused on work and focus on the person and how they’re doing, not necessarily their day-to-day work. Engaged employees are happy employees.
Be Flexible
For some of your employees, this is a big change and may require a period of adjustment. It’s also an adjustment for their families. Their daily routine is disrupted, so more responsibilities at home may be taken on; like taking children to school. There should be some flexibility in working hours to accommodate this change. It can be earlier starts or working later, or even getting some work done on weekends.
Results-Driven
Don’t focus on the tasks, tactics, or time spent working, but focus on the results and output. Real-life rears its head every once in a while, but if your employees’ work is getting done, it shouldn’t matter when it gets done, as long as it’s delivered on time.
