Town of Lyme: Website Concept

Residents need to find services, meetings and records across a legacy page structure.

Town of Lyme

Design approach

Consolidate pages around the resident’s task

This is a website concept for the Town of Lyme. The problem stated on this page is a legacy page structure that makes residents search across many pages to find services, meetings and records. The concept maps the existing URLs to a smaller set of service and information pages, then combines overlapping content around what a resident is trying to do.

The homepage shown here puts that idea on the first screen. A dark green utility bar links straight to frequent tasks such as paying taxes, property lookup, maps and agendas. Below a photograph of marshland along the river, eight white cards cover Agendas & Minutes, Calendar & Meetings, Permits & Applications, Property, GIS & Vision, Pay Taxes, Trash & Recycling, Voting & Elections and Town Departments. Each card pairs a one-line description with a direct action, so the main menu can follow the town’s structure while the cards answer common questions first.

1. Map existing URLs to useful service and information pages.

2. Combine overlapping content around the resident’s task.

3. Connect services, calendars and navigation into a clear journey.

Why it works
Task-based navigation, consolidated content and connected calendars help residents find services, meetings and records.

The URL map, the consolidated page set and the homepage layout depend on each other. The map decides how the 101 original URLs become 73 active destinations. The navigation and task cards then give residents two ways in: by department, or by the job they came to do. Connected calendars tie meetings back to the boards and documents they belong to. As a concept, it shows how the structure could work for residents before a full build. Learn more about our website design services.
