CARET Legal practice management for growing firms
CARET Legal is cloud practice management software for law firms. It was originally called Zola Suite and took its current name after joining CARET, the company formerly known as AbacusNext, which also makes accounting and legal software. CARET Legal combines matter management, calendaring, built-in email, document management, time and billing, legal accounting with trust accounting, and client intake in one system.
Where it fits
CARET Legal is aimed at small and mid-sized firms that want practice management and legal accounting in the same product rather than linking separate tools. Firms that bill hourly across many matters, manage client trust funds, or want email filed to matters inside the system often look at it. It runs in a web browser, so staff can work from the office or remotely, which makes user access controls and device security a key part of any rollout. Firms coming from older desktop systems should also plan for a change in habits, since filing email and documents to matters inside the system works best when everyone does it the same way from the first day.
How EVERNET helps
We help your firm compare CARET Legal with other practice management platforms based on how your attorneys and staff work day to day. During setup we help with users and permissions, sign-in security, email and calendar connections, document storage, and printer or scanner workflows. If you are moving from another system, we help plan the migration of matters, contacts, documents and billing history, and we check the results with your accounting staff before cutover. We also train users, support the computers and network the software runs on, and keep devices patched and protected. Learn more about our IT services for law firms and Microsoft 365 support.
Before you start
- Data: Collect matter lists, contacts, open invoices, trust balances and documents. Reconcile trust accounts before moving them.
- Permissions: Decide who can see billing rates, trust ledgers and confidential matters, and set roles to match.
- Integrations: Note the email platform, payment processor, accounting software and document tools the firm relies on.
- Account ownership: Make sure the firm, not a single person, holds the administrator account and billing relationship.
- Security settings: Turn on multi-factor sign-in, review session timeouts and confirm how firm data can be exported if you change systems.
Questions before you get started.
Which case and firm-administration workflows need to share data?
Map the case and firm-administration tasks that depend on shared information. Identify who creates each record, who updates it and which teams use it next. Evaluate CARET Legal against those handoffs so the proposed workflow has clear ownership and avoids unnecessary duplication between connected processes.
What must be reconciled and checked when existing records move into the cloud environment?
Agree which record samples, balances and reports the firm will compare before accepting migrated data. Include active matters and unusual cases alongside straightforward examples. Give validation and correction clear owners so the CARET Legal transition preserves the information staff need for continuing work.
Can EVERNET help with this workflow?
Yes. We help you connect the tool to the work your team needs to do, from evaluating fit to planning implementation and support. Tell us what you use today and where work gets stuck. We will outline responsibilities, deliverables and costs so you can decide how to proceed.
