PLATFORM GUIDE

Datto backup and recovery, planned and tested.

Datto, part of Kaseya since 2022, makes backup and business continuity products that are sold and supported through managed service providers. Its best-known line is SIRIS, which pairs a local appliance with copies in the Datto Cloud, so a failed server can be started as a virtual machine on the appliance or in the cloud while the original is repaired. Datto also offers direct-to-cloud endpoint backup for computers and servers, and SaaS Protection for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace data.

Where it fits

Datto suits organizations that cannot afford a long outage when a server fails, ransomware strikes or a site is lost. A law firm with a document management server, a biotech lab with instrument data on a file server, or an accounting firm in tax season all need to be back at work quickly, not just to have a copy of the files somewhere. Datto’s local and cloud recovery options are designed for that kind of continuity.

How EVERNET helps

We start by identifying what you have now, whether that is an existing SIRIS appliance, another Datto product or a different backup tool. Then we map the servers, applications and cloud data that matter, and agree how quickly each one needs to come back and how much data you could lose. We help size and configure the right product, set retention, and protect Microsoft 365 data separately from servers. Most important, we run real restore tests and record the steps and timing. After launch we watch backup jobs daily, fix failures and report results. This sits within our backup and disaster recovery service and our business continuity planning.

Before you start

  • List every system that must be recoverable, including servers, key workstations, line-of-business databases and cloud mailboxes.
  • Agree on recovery time and recovery point goals with leadership, not just IT.
  • Confirm who owns the Datto account relationship and what happens to cloud copies if you change providers.
  • Protect backup consoles and the appliance with multi-factor authentication and separate admin accounts, since attackers target backups first.
  • Check how long data is retained in the cloud and whether that meets your legal or client requirements.
  • Schedule restore tests at least a few times a year and after major changes.
  • Plan where staff will work and how they will connect if the office itself is unavailable.

Questions before you get started.

Which Datto product is actually deployed or being considered?

Identify the Datto product by its actual name and deployment, rather than relying on the broad BDR label. SIRIS is a backup and disaster recovery product in the portfolio. The relevant configuration, workloads and restore procedures depend on the specific product being used or considered.

How will local and off-site recovery requirements be validated with the selected product?

Define the situations in which recovery would happen locally and those requiring an off-site approach. Test representative workloads with the selected Datto product and record the steps, dependencies and result. Use those observations to refine the recovery plan instead of assuming a product name establishes a recovery outcome.
