Woodpecker document automation, now part of MyCase
Woodpecker is legal document automation software that works inside Microsoft Word. Law firms use it to turn frequently used documents into templates with fields and conditional logic, then produce letters, pleadings and agreements from client and matter data. Woodpecker is no longer sold as a standalone product. It became part of MyCase, which belongs to 8am (formerly AffiniPay), and its document automation is now offered within MyCase’s Advanced tier.
Where it fits
Woodpecker-style automation fits firms that produce the same kinds of documents again and again and want fewer copy-and-paste errors. It works best when templates are well maintained and matter data is accurate. Firms that still rely on older standalone Woodpecker templates need a plan for moving them into MyCase or another supported tool.
Common examples include an estate planning practice generating wills and trusts from intake data, a litigation team producing standard discovery documents or a real estate practice preparing closing letters. In each case, the time saved depends on how carefully templates are built, tested and kept current as forms and rules change.
How EVERNET helps
We help your firm inventory the Woodpecker templates still in use, who maintains them and which data they depend on. We help you evaluate the current MyCase document automation offering against real templates and matters, and we help you understand licensing options. Setup support includes Microsoft Word add-ins, user access and the connection to matter data.
When you move templates, we help plan the migration, test outputs side by side and confirm exceptions are handled. We train staff and support the workstations and Microsoft 365 accounts the tool runs on. Our IT services for law firms cover the full practice, and our Microsoft 365 support keeps Word and the related add-ins working.
Before you start
- Data: Collect your active templates, sample outputs and the fields each one uses.
- Permissions: Decide who can edit templates and who can only generate documents.
- Integrations: Confirm Microsoft Word versions and the practice management system that supplies data.
- Account ownership: Keep subscriptions and template libraries under firm-controlled accounts.
- Security settings: Require two-factor authentication and store templates where access is controlled and backed up.
If you are unsure how many templates you still use, start with a quick count of documents generated over the past few months. That list shows which templates deserve attention first.
Questions before you get started.
Which Woodpecker templates or existing workflows still need to be preserved?
List the Woodpecker templates still in use, the data they depend on and the people who maintain them. Preserve representative documents and identify recurring exceptions. Woodpecker's website now directs visitors to MyCase Advanced Document Automation, so evaluate existing workflows individually before deciding how to continue or replace them.
Would the current MyCase document-automation offering match the firm's data and template process?
Compare the firm's document process with the current MyCase offering using real templates and sample matter data. Review variable fields, approval steps, output formats and maintenance responsibilities. A successful evaluation should show how staff produce and check the documents they actually need, including unusual cases and required revisions.
